For many meditation beginners, it can be difficult to maintain a regular practice. Our minds may wonder, causing restlessness and lack of concentration. This is totally normal! With learning any new skill, there will be bumps in the road. One of the best ways to hone your meditation practice is to stick with your mental health routine. To help you on this journey, we have put together 5 meditation tips that will help you establish a strong foundation for your practice.

1.) Find a Quiet and Comfortable Space

Choose a place where you can sit comfortably and be free from distractions. This could be a cozy place in your home (pillow pile anyone?), outside in a park, or even in your work parking lot. The great thing about meditation is that it can be practiced anywhere!

2.) Focus on Your Breath

Focus your attention on your breath, inhaling and exhaling deeply and slowly. It’s okay to be intimidated by breath work and it’s okay if your mind wanders. Pull it back by trying to focus on your breath. Sometimes visualizations can help: Imaging seeing your breath move in and out of your body. 3.) Be Patient With Yourself

Meditation is a skill that requires practice. Be patient and kind to yourself as you develop your practice. When first starting, use a timer, and try just a few minutes. (Friendly reminder to give your timer a gentle tone and not a siren alarm sound!)  As each time limit becomes more natural and comfortable for you, you can increase your meditation time and even try this is new places

4.) Set a Regular Practice Schedule

Decide on a consistent time and duration for your meditation practice. This will help you to establish a routine and to stick to it. It helps to add a reminder to your calendar.

Purposefully set aside time in your schedule for your meditation session. This prioritizes your wellbeing and prevents others from booking a call during “you time”.

5.) Use Guided Meditation

Consider using guided meditation to help you stay focused and relaxed during your meditation practice. There are many guided meditations available online or in apps, and finding the right one for you is crucial! At Movement Genius, we have a wide range of guided meditation videos, such as this beginner video for learning how to train your focus.
