Why We Reach for Comfort in Tough Times

trauma wellness tips Aug 06, 2024

Have you ever noticed how, when you're scared, angry, or anxious, you often reach for something to make you feel better? It's a natural response to seek comfort during tough times. Understanding why we do this and finding healthy ways to soothe ourselves can help us handle stress better.

When we face fear, anger, or anxiety, our bodies and minds go into overdrive. This is part of our "fight or flight" response, which prepares us to either confront or run away from danger. But when there's no immediate danger, this response can make us feel overwhelmed. That's when we look for something to calm us down.

People use different things to soothe themselves. Some might eat their favorite snack, others might watch a funny video, and some might hug a pet or a loved one. These actions help to distract us and make us feel safe again.

Here are some healthy ways to soothe your mind and body:

  1. Deep Breathing: Taking slow, deep breaths can calm your nervous system and reduce stress.
  2. Exercise: Going for a walk, doing yoga, or any form of exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.
  3. Creative Activities: Drawing, painting, or playing an instrument can help express emotions and relax your mind.
  4. Reading or Listening to Music: These activities can take your mind off your worries and transport you to a different place.
  5. Talking to Someone: Sometimes, just sharing your feelings with a friend or family member can make a big difference.

Another important concept is co-regulation. This happens when we use our connection with others to help calm ourselves. For example, when a baby cries, a parent's soothing voice and touch can help calm them. Similarly, spending time with someone who is calm and understanding can help us feel more stable and secure.

Reaching for comfort is a normal part of dealing with stress. By choosing healthy ways to soothe ourselves and connecting with others, we can better manage our emotions and feel more at peace.
